Annamalai University UGC Recognition Issue. Students who have completed courses from Annamalai are worried. Finally the judgement delivered by Madras Highcourt.
Violation of UGC Regulations
Students from other Indian states like Kerala, Karnataka, etc. were also being given courses through distance education. Thousands of students from outside the state of Tamil Nadu complete their undergraduate courses through the study centers of Annamalai. But according to the latest UGC Regulations, a state universities cannot operate outside its state borders. The UGC itself has made it clear through several notifications that the courses of such universities are not recognized by the UGC. But Annamalai University has acted in violation of these prohibitions. The University has been providing distance education for the past few years in favor of Madras High Court interim judgment.
Concerns of Students
For a person, graduation is a very valuable step in his life. It is worth three years of age. Not a trivial matter. That is something to be appreciated. A person cannot mentally bear the moment he finds out that his degree, which he has spent three precious years of his life working hard for, is not recognized.
This is the same predicament that plagues distance education students from Annamalai. Students generally allege that the university's study centers granted admission to them by hiding from the students the fact that the course did not have proper UGC approval. "Had I known in advance that there is no UGC approval, I would not have joined the course..." - many say sadly.
Madras Highcourt Judgement
Ever since the UGC's notification came in March 2022, the concerned students organized and went to the Madras High Court. A case in which the university and the UGC have joined the same issue is pending in the High Court and the students are also joining the case. So the final judgment of the Madras High Court, which everyone was anxiously waiting for, came out in the month of January 2023. The court verdict said that all the universities should strictly follow the norms set by the UGC regarding distance education and should not act contrary to it. However, the court judgment mentions that the studies of the students who have completed the course by obtaining admission so far are valid on the basis of the interim judgment of the court. The students can be relieved because the Madras High Court has almost ruled in favor of the students in this case.
